One of the most common questions I hear is, "How can I tell if vintage jewelry is real gold?" While no single method is foolproof, there are several clues collectors and jewelers use to evaluate a piece.
1. Look for Hallmarks
Many gold pieces are stamped to indicate their purity. Common examples include:
- 10K
- 14K
- 18K
- 22K
- 375 (9K)
- 417 (10K)
- 585 (14K)
- 750 (18K)
Older European jewelry may use different hallmark systems depending on the country and period.
2. Look for Maker's Marks
Many vintage and antique pieces include a maker's mark alongside the gold purity. Identifying the maker can help estimate the age, origin, and authenticity of a piece.
3. Consider the Construction
Solid gold jewelry often displays high-quality craftsmanship. Pay attention to details such as solder joints, clasps, settings, and overall finish. Well-made construction doesn't guarantee a piece is solid gold, but it can provide useful context.
4. Understand Wear Patterns
Gold plating often wears away on areas of frequent contact, revealing a different coloured metal underneath. Solid gold does not have a plated layer to wear through.
