While hallmarks are an important clue, they should always be considered alongside the craftsmanship, construction, and, when appropriate, professional testing.
What Is a Gold Hallmark?
A hallmark is a stamp applied to a piece of jewelry to indicate its gold purity. Depending on the country and period, hallmarks may be expressed using karats or a three-digit fineness number.
Some pieces also include maker's marks, assay office marks, or date letters that provide additional information about their origin.

Both systems indicate the same thing; the amount of pure gold within the alloy.
Why Isn't Jewelry Made From Pure Gold?
Pure gold is beautiful, but it's also very soft.
To improve durability, jewelers alloy gold with other metals, creating pieces that are better suited for everyday wear while retaining the beauty and value of gold.
Are Hallmarks Always Accurate?
Hallmarks are an excellent starting point, but they shouldn't be the only factor used to determine authenticity.
Over decades of wear, marks can become faint or partially worn away. In rare cases, counterfeit hallmarks have also been found.
That's why experienced buyers evaluate the entire piece, considering its weight, craftsmanship, construction, and results from professional testing when needed.
