Roman Empire Bronze Signet Ring

A genuine ancient bronze signet-style ring dating to the Roman Empire, offering a tangible connection to the people and everyday material culture of the ancient Roman world.

Rings were widely worn throughout the Roman Empire and could serve decorative, personal and practical purposes. Signet and engraved rings might carry portraits, deities, animals, symbols or other imagery meaningful to their owners, while some were used to impress designs into wax for sealing documents and correspondence.

This example features a broad, flattened bezel with substantial shoulders and a deeply aged surface patina. Centuries of wear have obscured much of the original bezel detail, and no specific engraved design can now be confidently identified. Rather than restoring or interpreting what has been lost, the ring is presented in its surviving condition as an authentic artifact of Roman material culture.

This piece was acquired directly from Marius Staszak, from whom Jill and The Gems also acquired its first collection of ancient coins. According to Staszak, the ring was acquired by him at an auction in Poland. Its original archaeological recovery location and earlier ownership history are unknown.
