A genuine ancient bronze pendant attributed to the Roman Empire, featuring a worn but still visible bird motif at its centre. Small personal objects such as this offer an intimate connection to everyday life in the ancient Roman world—objects that were worn, carried and kept by individuals nearly two millennia ago.
Birds appeared frequently throughout Roman art and material culture, represented on everything from jewelry and coins to mosaics, frescoes and household objects. Different species could carry religious, symbolic or decorative meaning; however, the considerable wear on this example prevents the bird from being confidently identified. Rather than assigning a meaning that cannot be substantiated, the surviving motif is presented as it appears today.
The pendant retains its original suspension loop and displays extensive surface wear and naturally developed patination consistent with its considerable age. Its irregular surface, softened details and surviving bird imagery give the piece the unmistakable character of an archaeological object that has endured centuries.
This piece was acquired directly from Marius Staszak, from whom Jill and The Gems also acquired its first collection of ancient coins. According to Staszak, the pendant was acquired by him at an auction in Poland. Its original archaeological recovery location and earlier ownership history are unknown.
