Kingdom of Hungary Silver Denarius of Ferdinand I (AD 1526–1564)

A genuine silver denarius struck during the reign of Ferdinand I, King of Hungary and later Holy Roman Emperor. Issued during the 16th century, this coin circulated at a time when Central Europe stood at the crossroads of the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the expanding Ottoman Empire.

This coin dates to the reign of Ferdinand I, who became King of Hungary following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, one of the most consequential battles in Hungarian history. The conflict reshaped Central Europe, leaving Hungary divided between Habsburg and Ottoman influence for generations. As both King of Hungary and later Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand played a central role in defending Christian Europe against Ottoman expansion while strengthening the Habsburg dynasty.

This specimen was acquired directly from detectorist Marius Staszak, who personally recovered it through legal metal detecting activities in Europe. Based on information provided by the finder, this coin forms part of a collection of Roman and medieval coins recovered during a 2025 metal-detecting expedition through Romania and Bulgaria. The exact recovery location for this specimen was not documented at the time of discovery.
